Joseph C. Dunn
WEST GARDINER – Joseph C. Dunn passed away at age 97 at home in West Gardiner, on Dec. 31, 2024, surrounded by his daughter Sheila Dunn Bohlin, his life partner of more than 30 years Janice Adams, and her daughter Tina Adams, loyal dog Scout, and cat Milo.
Born in Gardiner on May 20, 1927, the son of the late Roscoe and Marguarite (Scuryna) Dunn. Joseph graduated from Gardiner High School in 1944, fourth in his class. As a football and hockey player in high school, he later taught himself to water-ski at the family camp, and as a tennis player helped launch the Gardiner Area Tennis Association and installed lighting on the courts.
He was a Merchant Marine from 1944 to 1947 and sailed to South America, Africa, Cuba, and Europe. Following his service years, he was a lineman for C.M.P. Co. in the Transmission unit, which included installing, climbing, and repairing the highest electrical poles.
A creative and gifted craftsman throughout his life, he built two homes (one involving granite work), workshop areas, and a swimming pool. He carved fish, took painting classes, and sewed tapestry bags and bargello quilts, among his many artistic pursuits. He was capable of learning any skill he desired. An avid fly fisherman, he caught one of the largest Atlantic Salmon in Maine in1969.
Joseph was predeceased by brother John, sisters Ruth LaCorte and Margaret Jamison, and his wife of 34 years Constance. He is survived by Sheila’s husband Jan, and many nieces and nephews as well the children and grandchildren of Janice Adams.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Joseph’s life will be held this summer.
