
Mary E. Stevens
AUGUSTA – Mary E. Stevens, 76, passed away on Jan. 14, 2025 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Long Term Care at Glenridge.
She was born on Feb. 27, 1948, the daughter of Gladys (Stewart) and Robert P. Sawyer Sr.
Mary grew up in Augusta and graduated from Cony High School in the class of 1966 where she was a talented athlete and a bright student. She was employed by the State of Maine at the Department of Transportation for many years where she excelled in dealing with the public. Following her retirement, Mary enjoyed being outside and going for her daily walks.
Mary had a beautiful singing voice and used her creativity to craft picture frames out of sticks. Mary loved all creatures great and small and for many years, she provided a loving home for many stray cats who became her most beloved possessions.
Mary was a wonderful daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She had a quick wit and easily engaged in conversation with old and new acquaintances. She will be remembered for her independence and caring soul.
She was predeceased by her parents; and her siblings Robert P. Sawyer Jr., Frederick “Pete” Sawyer, Margaret McDonald and Gayle “Ann” Sawyer.
Mary is survived by her siblings Judith Jenkins and Joan Sawyer; and several nieces and nephews, including beloved nephew, Aaron Cake and his wife Dana; and dear friend, Jayne Chase.
Mary’s family would like to thank the staff at the Alzheimer’s Care Center in Gardiner for the wonderful care they provided to Mary while she was a resident.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Manchester with a date and time to be announced. Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME 04330. Condolences, stories and photos may be shared by visiting http://www.plummerfh.com.
