Bayna Castner

WINTHROP – Bayna Castner, 83, passed away on Jan. 12, 2025, at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta. She was born in Gardiner on June 6, 1941, to the late Norman and Willie Dean (Clack) Boothby.

Bayna attended Edward Little High School in Auburn (Class of 1959). Following high school, she went on to Fischer Junior College in Boston, Mass. and then received her associate’s degree from Howard Community College in Columbia, Md.

Bayna had many jobs throughout the years, including running a small catering business and completed her career working for 20 years as a bookkeeper at Toby’s Dinner Theater in Columbia, a job that allowed her to immerse herself in the theater she loved so much.

In her free time, she liked gardening, growing and pickling cucumbers (Bread and Butter pickles), cooking, traveling, attending musical theater, reading, camping, mastering jigsaw puzzles, creating personal greeting cards and most importantly spending time with her family and friends.

In addition to her husband, Gary Beal, Bayna is survived by her daughter, Janet Canty of Clio, Calif. and her daughter June Castner (Mark Bartenfelder) of Washington, D.C. She is also survived by her grandchildren Justin Canty, Adam Canty, Grace Bartenfelder, Alexa Bartenfelder, Nathan Risley, Aidan Bartenfelder and Fiona Bartenfelder. She is also survived by her siblings Gary Boothby (the late Betsey), Brenda Boothby (Chris Nelson), Debra Goulet (Robert) and Dale Boothby.

A visitation will be held at 11 a.m., with service at 12 noon, on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Winthrop United Methodist Church, 58 Main Street, Winthrop. A reception will immediately follow the service at her home in Winthrop. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.

Arrangements and guidance are in the care of the Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 62 Bowdoin Street, Maine.
