In regards to Rep. Jared Golden’s introduced legislation implementing a 10% universal tariff on all imports.
Tariffs need to be applied in a more strategic manner. A universal tariff will most likely generate reciprocal universal tariffs from our trading partners, causing no real change in overall trade or location of manufacturing. The only effect would be a greater than 10% increase in cost to people in all countries, exacerbating global inflation. Job creation will not occur and wages will continue to lag price increases.
While I agree with the concept that tariffs will help, I believe that we must apply them judiciously.
I’d suggest that he spends his efforts on reducing taxes and regulations to help this country’s manufacturers compete on the global stage.
