Candace A. Avery
RANDOLPH – Candace A. Avery, 78, of Randolph, died peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2025, following a long illness.
Candace was born in Gardiner on Aug. 29, 1946, the daughter of the late Norman C. and Vivian (Albee) Avery. She spent most of her life as a resident of Randolph. She attended Randolph Grammar School and was a graduate of Gardiner Area High School, class of 1964. She received her B.S. in Education from Gorham State College, later the University of Southern Maine, in 1968. She received her M.Ed. from that same school and has done post graduate work at UMO and Farmington. She enjoyed a long career as a teacher in the Augusta School Department, retiring in 2005. She subsequently served on the MSAD #11 School Board for 10 years.
She was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church in Gardiner, where she sang in the choir, was a lay reader, and served several terms on Vestry.
Candace had a great love of travel and with her dearest friend, Cecile, literally traveled the world. She was also an avid reader, often joking that her house would someday collapse from the weight of books.
She is survived by several cousins; her dear friend, Cecile Gregoire of Hallowell; as well as many friends and colleagues.
A memorial service celebrating Candace’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2, at Christ Episcopal Church, 2 Dresden Ave., Gardiner. Burial will be in the spring.
