Norman Alva Payne
VERO BEACH, Fla. – Our father, Norman Alva Payne, born in Birmingham, Alabama, has died at home 93 years young. He was the youngest child of Basil and Doris Payne, growing up in Hallowell and graduating from high school there, playing football, basketball, and baseball. Dad married our mother, Madelon Stadley of Lompoc California after serving honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps. He then studied architecture at UC Berkeley, where he earned his degree. Moving back to Maine, he worked for the State Museum as Exhibit Planner/Architect until his retirement – a job he loved. He was a jack of all trades and had keen interest and talent in painting and sculpture. He loved jazz, dancing, thrift shopping, and Lewiston’s Sam’s Italian sandwiches. Our father is survived by our mother, Madelon Welch, their three children: Debra Adams, Marc Payne, and Mary Dennett; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren along with his second wife Ligia Pinto and stepdaughter, Martha Gonzales. We will miss him. Service was held at gravesite Jan, 25, 2025. Memories and condolences may be shared at http://www.dignitymemorial.com.
