JACKMAN — A 52-year-old Massachusetts man died Thursday after his snowmobile struck a box truck on Hastings Road.
Michael Mitchell, chief deputy at the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, said Jamie Rooney, 52, of Haverhill, Massachusetts, was riding his Ski-Doo snowmobile with a friend on the snowmobile trail ITS 89 when he traveled into Hastings Road and struck an EJ Carrier box cargo truck driven by Katheryn Clark, 22, of Jackman, shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday.
“He couldn’t stop in time, and went right into the road,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell said Rooney was apparently unfamiliar with the snowmobile route he was riding on and did not slow down at the point where the trail crosses the road. The snowmobile he was driving entered the traffic lane and struck the box truck.
Mitchell said there is no evidence that alcohol was a factor, and Rooney was wearing a helmet.
Hastings Road was covered with hard-packed snow, so accident reconstruction was not possible, Mitchell said.
Deputy Neil McMillin investigated the crash. Jackman Moose River Rescue and Jackman Paramedic assisted at the scene.
