WATERVILLE — The 28th Maine International Film Festival is set to return to Waterville July 11-20.

The regular film submission deadline is Friday, Feb. 14.

The annual festival showcases 100 films in 10 days, highlighting the best of American independent, international, and repertory cinema, including the finest Maine-made productions, celebrated each year with the Tourmaline Prizes, according to a news release from the festival.

It accepts submissions of feature-length and short films of any genre. Special consideration will be given to works that were filmed in Maine or that have a significant Maine theme or focus.

To qualify as a Maine-made film eligible for the Tourmaline Prize competition, the majority of the film’s principal production must have taken place in Maine. Films with pre- and post-production activities that occurred in Maine are not automatically eligible unless the majority of the principal production occurred in Maine. Films meeting these made-in-Maine qualifications may be submitted for 50% off normal submission fees.

Meanwhile, the 2025 Maine Student Film + Video Festival is moving to July 19. Previously scheduled to take place in March, the film and video festival will now be held as part of the 28th Maine International Film Festival.

Student filmmakers now have the chance to see their films screen before an international audience, meet with professional filmmakers from around the world, and win prizes.
