JAY — The state Department of Transportation is reassigning seven workers from its crew camp on state Route 4 next month to either the Dixfield or Fairbanks Village facilities in Farmington.

“Maine DOT is always looking for efficiencies,” spokesman Paul Merrill wrote in an email. “This can sometimes involve closing a facility and reassigning personnel based upon current staff and operational need. There are three plow routes served by the Jay camp. We notified employees on January 27th that they would be reassigned to adjacent facilities in March.”

“Our camps are crew locations. There are dozens of them throughout the state,” Merrill said.

Eight workers are assigned to the Jay site. Seven of them will be reassigned and the eighth one is retiring, he said.

“The change should not significantly impact response times or snow fighting operations,” Merrill wrote. “The salt shed in Jay will remain functional along with the fuel tanks.”

The Jay site will remain Maine DOT property and could be a satellite camp in the winter and/or a bridge crew camp in the summer, he said. “We will be evaluating the operational needs moving forward.”
