SKOWHEGAN — The suspect arrested in connection with a murder and an assault in Norridgewock continued to be held in jail without bail after a brief appearance in court Monday.

Kendall Purnell, 38, of Norridgewock is charged with the intentional or knowing or depraved indifference murder of Harold Burgess, 71, according to court records.
Purnell is also charged with elevated aggravated assault, a Class A offense, resulting in serious injury to Shawn Haggan, 45, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday by Sgt. James Andrews of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit — Central.
The dangerous weapon listed in the complaint is a two-by-four board.
Both offenses are alleged to have occurred Friday in Norridgewock.
Purnell, who is being held at the Somerset County Jail in Madison, appeared by video conference at Somerset County Superior Court in Skowhegan for a brief initial appearance.
Superior Court Chief Justice Robert E. Mullen informed Purnell of the charges against him. Purnell did not enter a plea because the charges are murder and a felony-level offense.
Assistant Attorney General Kate Bozeman and Purnell’s defense lawyer, Caitlyn Smith, agreed that scheduling a hearing on bail, known formally as a Harnish hearing, would be considered on a day-to-day basis.
Purnell, who was wearing a green smock that appeared similar to those used for mental health protocols at jails, interrupted briefly to ask for the opportunity to ask for bail.
Mullen advised Purnell that it was best he let his lawyer speak, and Smith said she would consult with Purnell afterward.
Smith also asked for more time before discussing any issues related to potential mental evaluations, which Mullen said was acceptable.
A probable cause affidavit supporting Purnell’s arrest was impounded at the request of the Office of the Maine Attorney General, according to court records.
The Maine State Police arrested Purnell on Saturday morning on the murder charge, the agency said in a statement issued later Saturday. Investigators were seen working throughout the day near 40 Walnut Drive in Norridgewock.
Late Friday, deputies from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at a residence on Walnut Drive, state police said. Deputies found one man dead and another man with serious head injuries.
Police in the area were advised to be on the lookout for Purnell, who was believed to be driving the homeowner’s vehicle, state police said. The statement did not identify the homeowner or say if the homeowner was the man who died or man who was seriously injured.
At about 1 a.m. Saturday, Waterville police officers stopped the vehicle at the Irving gas station and convenience store on Kennedy Memorial Drive in Waterville and identified Purnell, according to state police.

Detectives questioned Purnell and then arrested him, state police said.
State police did not release the names Saturday of the man who died or the injured man, though their names were listed in the criminal complaint filed in court.
The injured man — now identified in court records as Haggan — was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan and then taken by a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, police said. Haggan was listed in critical condition Saturday. A hospital spokesperson said she had no information to release Monday afternoon.
An autopsy was expected to be performed at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta on the man who was killed, now identified as Burgess, state police said Saturday.
Shannon Moss, the spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in an email Monday afternoon that she anticipated further information to be released later in the day.
