WINSLOW — Braden Rodrigue scored only eight points Wednesday night. Luckily for the Winslow boys basketball team, four of those eight were the most important of the game and propelled the Black Raiders to the Class B North quarterfinals.

Rodrigue led a strong offensive charge in the fourth quarter that gave No. 5 Winslow a 51-43 victory over No. 12 Maranacook in a preliminary-round game at a packed Mansfield Gym.

“We’re so excited,” said Rodrigue, a senior guard. “That was a tough game, and (Maranacook) gave us their all. We’re so hyped to go to Bangor (for the quarterfinals).”

Winslow (12-7), which moves on to play No. 4 Mt. Desert Island (10-8) at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, has won four of its last five games.

“The postseason is (all about) survive and advance,” Winslow coach Ken Lindlof said. “We’re not always pretty, and Maranacook gives you so many different looks, so you’re constantly adjusting and counter-adjusting.”

How Winslow won

• After trailing 21-15 at halftime, Winslow outscored Maranacook by a 19-8 margin in the third quarter, led by sophomore Carter Calvo, who scored eight of his 12 points. A 3-pointer by Jack Flaherty gave the Black Raiders their first lead of the night late in the quarter, and Poulin nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 34-29 entering the fourth.

• Jack Fontaine was 5 of 6 at the foul line in the fourth quarter and Grady Hreben knocked down a 3-pointer to give Maranacook a 37-36 lead with 6:17 remaining. But Rodrigue put Winslow back in front late in the quarter, nailing two free throws, then adding a transition bucket off a steal.

“(Maranacook) ran a box-and-one and triangle-two (for defense), so I knew I was going to have to take a different role,” Rodrigue said. “I let my teammates do the scoring, and they got it done. For the free throws, I was super nervous, but I’ve got a clear mind and got the job done.”

They said it

“Every one of (Rodrigue’s) points was essential. He’s always going to give us a great effort. He’s not afraid to make the pass. Our best games are probably when he scores 14, 15, 16 (points).” — Ken Lindlof

“There were some open gaps (in the post), so I just took advantage of it.” — Carter Calvo, on his eight points in the third quarter

“I’m really proud of all of our guys … Everybody had to contribute today. No one could take a break today on defense, rebounding or ball movement.” — Lindlof
