Sandra J. (Wheelock) Crockett
WINTHROP – Sandra J. (Wheelock) Crockett, 87, passed away peacefully Tuesday Feb. 18, 2025, at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta. She was born on Nov. 24, 1937, the daughter of Leroy and Leta (Mitton) Wheelock.
Sandra was a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1956. On March 8, 1958, Sandra married Stephen R. Crockett, and they began their 67 years of life together raising a family and enjoying a blessed and loving life.
Sandra had a strong work ethic and started working at a young age picking beans, and other odd jobs while in school. While raising her family, Sandra worked part time with her family both at Damon’s and Whipper’s Pizza. After her family grew up, she went to work as the business manager of the Department of Public Lands for the State of Maine and then went on to become State Controller for the State of Maine in the Brennan administration.
Sandra loved family and friends. She especially loved the family gatherings at Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, and Nana Colson’s birthday celebration. She also enjoyed many wonderful times at the family camp on Moosehead Lake playing many card games, picking raspberries, blueberries, and making blueberry cakes and raspberry pies.
Sandra loved to travel and had many great trips with her mother, Leta, and sister, Patty. They traveled to Ireland, Scotland, the Holy Land, and Egypt. Mom and dad also traveled with her brothers to Aruba, Florida, and Las Vegas. Sandra enjoyed their winter home in Bonita Springs, Fla., where she liked playing Bridge, going to lunch with her very special friends and spending some time at the casino.
One of her greatest joys was her flower gardens and she could often be found in the early evening watering and tending her many gardens. They not only brought joy to her but to the many who drove by.
Sandra is survived by her husband, Stephen R. Crockett of Winthrop; one son, Ned S. Crockett and wife Melanie of Winthrop, two daughters, Lynn C. Kimmel of Winthrop and Belinda A. Golden and husband Mike of Augusta; sisters-in-law Eva Wheelock, Rita Wheelock and Bobbie Wheelock, as well as many half-brothers, half-sisters, and half-brother and sisters in-law; Sandra is also survived by seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews; and cousins.
