The end of an era has arrived for the Boston Bruins.

Brad Marchand – the captain of the team, a face of he franchise and the last remaining member of the 2011 Stanley Cup champions – was dealt out of town on Friday. Not only was Marchand traded, he was sent to the team that ended their last two seasons in the playoffs, the Florida Panthers, according to multiple reports.

The retool that Bruins president Cam Neely and GM Don Sweeney hinted at turned into a major rebuild with the dealing of Marchand and, earlier in the day, Charlie Coyle. Sweeney finished off his day by sending Brandon Carlo to another divisional rival, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Panthers are sending back one draft pick — either a second-round pick in 2027 or a first-round pick in 2028 — to the Bruins, according to ESPN’s John Buccigross. If that’s all Florida is giving up, a portion of Marchand’s salary will have to be retained for the deal to be completed. Marchand has a cap hit of $6.125 million. Florida entered the day with $4.1 million in cap space.

Marchand, 36, has played his entire 16-season NHL career with the Bruins. In 1,090 games, he has 422 goals and 976 points. He has 21 goals and 47 points through 61 games this season. He has missed Boston’s past three games while dealing with an upper-body injury sustained in the Bruins’ 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.

An interesting subplot to watch unfold: Panthers center Sam Bennett and Marchand were at the center of a fracas in the second round of last season’s Stanley Cup playoffs after Bennett sucker punched Marchand during Game 3 of the series, which the Panthers won in six games on its way to winning the franchise’s first Stanley Cup.

The Bruins reportedly dealt Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche for a decent return.

The Bruins sent Coyle, who has one year left on his contract at $5.25 million, and a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Avs for Casey Middlestadt, who has two years left on his deal for $5.75 million, prospect William Zellers (the Avs’ third-round pick last June) and a second-round pick.

Middlestadt, 26, was obtained last year by the Avs from the Buffalo Sabres to be their third line center but he did not play up to the Avs’ expectations. In 63 games with the Avs this year, he has 11-23-34 totals. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Middlestadt’s best season was 2022-23 in Buffalo, when he had 15-44-59 totals.

Zellers is playing now in Green Bay (USHL), where he has 37-21-58 totals in 40 games, second in scoring in the junior league. The left shot forward from Maple Grove, Minn., was originally committed to Boston University but is now set to go to North Dakota.

Coyle, the Weymouth native, now has a great chance to have another run at the Stanley Cup with Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar.

Boston also acquired Henri Jokiharju from the Buffalo Sabres for a 2026 fourth-round draft pick, and Danill Misyui from the Devils in exchange for Marc McLaughlin.

Misyul, 24, has played in just one game for the Devils this season. The defenseman has eight assists in 47 games with the Utica Comets.
