Erasing the words “climate crisis” from all government websites does not make the climate emergency go away. The average global temperature has increased dramatically since the Industrial Revolution due to humans burning fossil fuels. Because the temperature has increased, every corner of the Earth is experiencing “weird” weather that causes property damage, deaths, crop failures, human migration, sea level rise and species extinction.

The best thing the human race can do is transition from a fossil fuel-driven economy to a green energy economy. And yet our president has declared, without evidence, an energy emergency solvable by “Drill, baby, drill.”

President Trump has frozen appropriated funds for clean energy projects even though clean energy has become cheaper than fossil fuel- generated energy in many instances and will continue to drop in price relative to oil, gas and coal. He has stopped approvals of wind farms on public lands and in offshore waters.

Trump officials are considering ending fossil fuel regulation by repealing the “endangerment finding,” which says that greenhouse gases pose a threat to public health and welfare. This “finding,” backed by science, allowed greenhouse gases to be regulated by the EPA under the Clean Air Act. If it is repealed, there will be no reason for power plants and industry to scrub greenhouse gases coming out of their smokestacks. Trump is picking fossil fuels over clean energy at our grandchildren’s peril.
