NEWPORT — In April, work will begin on a $7 million project to replace the intersection of routes 2 and 7 with a roundabout to improve safety and mobility in the area where many crashes have happened.
Ahead of the April 14 start date, an in-person public information meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, where area residents will be able to get information about the project, its intended outcome and what the changes the project will bring about mean for them. Members of the project staff will be on hand to answer questions.
The project, which is expected to be completed by late 2026, will mean that routes 2 and 7 within the project area will be fully closed. Construction is expected to start just east of Lovely Drive and continue east for about 1/5 of a mile.
Through traffic on Route 2 will be detoured to High Street and Banks Road. Local traffic on Route 2 can reach businesses via High Street. Through traffic on Route 11 will be able to pass through the intersection. The detour is anticipated to be in effect through November.
The project was awarded to Gordon Contracting Inc., of Sangerville.
The open house will be held from 5-7 p.m., at the town’s Public Safety Building at 21 Water St.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
