The federal government is finally enforcing Title IX. It’s just common sense; biological males should not compete with biological females in sports. Like all states, Maine should abide by the rule of law.

Maine has a long history of willingly complying with federal mandates to draw down federal funding, but Gov. Mills is refusing to acknowledge commonly understood law. Her obstinacy is placing millions of federal dollars for public education in Maine at risk.

Furthermore, I respect Rep. Laurel Libby’s efforts to bring the issue to the attention of all Mainers and, indeed, to the whole country. It is unconscionable that female athletes are being subjected to an invasion of privacy in the locker room and danger on the playing field.

Sadly, they are being ridiculed if they object. It is even more infuriating that girls, many of whom have trained for years, are forced to smile on the podium as biologically stronger boys snatch their awards. Rep. Libby should not be censured for telling the truth. Instead, she should be thanked for her courage.
