
Rachel Ann Matthews
FAIRFIELD – Rachel Ann Matthews, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on Jan. 23, 1941, Rachel lived a life filled with kindness, warmth, and an unwavering love for those around her.
She was proud to have served as a religious education instructor for the Catholic Church until her retirement in 2004. Through her dedication and faith, she touched the lives of many, guiding generations in their spiritual journey with wisdom, compassion, and a deep commitment to her faith.
Rachel is survived by her devoted husband, Charles Matthews Sr.; as well as her cherished children, Charles Matthews Jr. and his wife Cathy, Lisa Fortier and her husband Daniel, and Joseph Matthews and his wife Mamie. Rachel was a proud and loving grandmother to Nick Conner, Melissa Fortier, Nate Nadeau and his significant other Lexie Glidden, Matthew Fortier, Ethan Matthews and his significant other Kristen Dexter, Samantha Matthews, Leighton Matthews, Mackenzie Matthews, and Caleb Matthews. Her love extended to her great-grandchildren, Marshall, Sawyer, Myles, and Chloe, who brought her endless joy. She is also survived by her dear sister, Camilla Hachey; as well as countless other family members, including nephews, nieces, cousins, and dear friends who were blessed to know her.
She was predeceased by her parents, Cornelius J. Begin and Bernadette (Drouin) Begin; her brother Cornelius J. Begin Jr., affectionately known as Buster, and her sister Jean Tozier.
Rachel will be remembered for her gentle spirit, wisdom, and the deep care she showed for her family, friends, and faith community. She created a home filled with love, laughter, and treasured moments that will be carried forward for generations.
Visitations for Rachel will be held on April 2, 2025 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Veilleux’s Funeral Home at 8 Elm St. Waterville. A mass of Christian burial will be held at Notre Dame on April 3, 2025, at 10 a.m. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor her memory.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Lakewood Northern Light Continuing Care in Waterville for their kindness and devotion to Rachel throughout the end of her life. Rachel’s kindness, love, and faith will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
