James Barry Roche

FARMINGDALE – James Barry Roche (“Barry,” “Hugsy Bear”), 91, of Farmingdale, passed away peacefully at home on March 24, 2025. Born April 26, 1933, he was just weeks away from celebrating his 92nd birthday.

Born in Lewiston, Barry was a salesman driven by integrity and purpose. After gaining experience at Blanchard and Sons, he founded J.B. Roche & Company Inc. in the 1970s, selling and installing fire and safety systems throughout New England. Later in life, he stepped back from work to spend more time with his beautiful wife and family.

Barry married Janis Lee Pepin on July 23, 1964, and they shared a lifelong love of adventure, dancing, and laughter until her passing in 2023. To them, they were always 30 years old—they never believed in growing old.

Barry had a sharp mind and quick wit. He was on a first-name basis with tech support, always eager to learn and connect with others. His striking blue eyes twinkled with mischief as he shared stories, jokes, and strong opinions on sports, politics, and life.

He was predeceased by his parents, James and Elsie Roche; his brother, Gregory Roche; and his sons, Thomas Roche and James Duncklee. He is survived by his children, Gary Duncklee, Tina Roche, and Liz and Rob Nitzel; his grandchildren; and many cherished friends and extended family.

A memorial service will be held on Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. at Augusta Unitarian Universalist Community Church, followed by a reception.

In Barry’s honor, open your heart to kindness and grow in your ability to care beyond your comfort.
