Last Sunday’s story, “A groundswell of everyday people,” was long and descriptive but lacking in hard news about the many “Hands Off!” rallies around the state.
Only eight community rallies were even mentioned when, in fact, there were at least 29 of them – including Bridgton, Lubec, Millinocket, Rockland, Houlton, Bath and York.
Brunswick, where I attended, was one of the communities not mentioned despite an impressive turnout of at least 1,500 people. Fully 600 people had signed up ahead of time; many times that number came without signing up. It was a spirited and hopeful event, with signs, songs, speakers and chants that all vowed opposition to the destructive, norm-breaking, often illegal actions of Elon Musk and the Trump administration.
The Maine Trust owes it to the rest of the country, which depends on it for accurate reporting on Maine, to do a better job.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
