NEW SHARON — A horse owned by a Mercer man had to be euthanized by a Franklin County deputy Monday night after the horse got loose, ran down Taylor Road and was hit by a truck on Route 27, Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. wrote in email Tuesday.
At 5:47 p.m. Sgt. Jesse Clement of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of a horse that was running loose and still wearing its harness on Taylor Road in New Sharon.
Six minutes later, Deputy Gerald Maccione received a report of a truck vs. horse crash on Mile Hill Road, also known a state Route 27, in New Sharon.
A Kingfield man was driving north on Mile Hill Road when the loose horse ran out in front of his pickup into the travel lane resulting in a collision, Nichols wrote.
Nichols estimated the horse ran about a mile before it was struck.
The horse had to be put down at the scene because of severe injuries.
The New Sharon Fire Department responded to the scene.
