I am morally outraged at the DOGE-fueled cuts to the Maine State Library, which have forced the layoff of 13 librarians.
These librarians perform useful services to Mainers, including people with vision impairments and rural library patrons. Librarians are not overpaid, and their jobs help job seekers, English language learners, business people, students — the people who fuel the Maine economy. The loss of these jobs harms librarians and their families, but the loss of their work harms all of us.
I encourage all Mainers to support our public libraries, and encourage our representatives in Congress to move quickly to restore this funding and contain the depredations of DOGE and the Trump administration.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
