State Rep. Laurel Libby has sponsored a bill to repeal Real ID in Maine, which she says “undermines the privacy of law-abiding Americans.” However, just a few months ago, she gathered signatures for a voter ID law, saying Maine people “want to have confidence that we have strong elections in our state and they understand that requiring an ID to vote is … common sense.” (“Supporters of a Maine voter ID law hand in signatures to force referendum,” Jan. 6).
The voter ID law is aimed at voter suppression, nothing could be clearer. She wants Mainers to show ID to vote, while working to prevent anyone in the state from having a verified ID. I hope the state Legislature ignores this nonsense.
