Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff, died Monday. He was 88.
Several special Masses and prayer gatherings to honor the late pontiff will be held at churches in Maine.
MASSES
There are a number of upcoming Masses for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis.
The first will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, at 307 Congress St. in Portland. The service will be led by Bishop James Ruggieri.
Also at 6 p.m. Wednesday, a Mass will be held at St. Mary of the Visitation Parish, at 110 Military St. in Houlton.
At 6 p.m. Thursday, a Mass will be held at Holy Martyrs of North America Church, at 266 Foreside Rd. in Falmouth.
At 9 a.m. Saturday, a Mass will be held at St. John Church, at 207 York St. in Bangor.
At 6 p.m. on Monday, a Mass will be held at St. Louis Church, at 26 East Main St. in Fort Kent.
On May 1, Mass is at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, at 231 Main St. in Ellsworth.
OTHER SERVICES
A Mass for the intention of Pope Francis is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Francis of Assisi Church, at 81 Court St. in Belfast.
At the Holy Family Parish at 145 Pritham Ave in Greenville, the Rosary will be prayed for Pope Francis on Thursday at 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m. on Friday and 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.
The Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed for Pope Francis before the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday at St. Faustina Church, 370 Main St. in Jackman.
