The state of Maine and our children are now pawns in a political stunt meant to force our state to ignore the laws of Maine and fulfill the wishes of President Trump and his pack of DOGEs. They have decided to punish every Maine child by illegally withholding education funds. All because two trans children in our state want to play sports. They don’t want these kids to live their best lives, that they, their families and their doctors all believe is correct and healthy for them.
Gov. Mills must uphold her oath and the law is clear. Laws must be changed by the Legislature, not simply ignored.
Sports are voluntary competitions, where one risks loss. The loss of a race doesn’t compare to the loss of so many more grants, scholarships and grad programs, jobs in science, public service and research, that are hurting our girls right now. Also, health care, life choices, Social Security, food stamps, child care, WIC and a fair housing market are being dismantled. Where is the outcry?
It’s time to put aside this hate and fear, be kind to others and mind our own business. Let’s work together for the sake of all our children.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
