Gov. Janet Mills should be commended for the courage she is displaying in defending the rule of law in Maine and not allowing President Trump’s threats to weaken our laws.
These are challenging times. It is impossible to know to what extent the Trump administration will continue threatening Maine institutions, what actions it will take and who all will be directly affected.
As an educator, I am, unfortunately, familiar with the ugliness of bullying. It is not always easy to plant our feet and stay cool when someone comes charging at us for defending what we know to be right. It is not painless when someone torments us by intimating that those we care about will suffer consequences because we refuse to kowtow. But Gov. Mills has displayed spirit and mettle. I am proud to have her represent the state of Maine and know that there are many other Mainers who share this pride. Hopefully she knows that there is support and appreciation for her braveness.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
