
Wayne E. Nason
SCARBOROUGH – Wayne E. Nason died on April 18, 2025, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine. He was born in Biddeford, Maine, on Jan. 29, 1948, to Donald C. and Mary E. Nason.
Wayne grew up in Saco and graduated from Thornton Academy. He went on to earn his degree from Maine Maritime Academy, graduating in 1970. He spent over 29 years sailing around the world, primarily on oil tankers, ultimately attaining the rank of Captain. He continued sailing until his retirement in 1999.
After coming ashore, Wayne began a second career as a curriculum developer at the STAR Center in Dania Beach, Fla. There, he designed and taught training courses for the American Maritime Officers union—the largest union of U.S. merchant marine officers—and played a key role in developing and maintaining certification standards with the National Maritime Center.
When Wayne married Sandra, he became an instant stepfather—a role he embraced with pride and joy. He was predeceased by Sandra, his beloved wife of 36 years.
Wayne is survived by his stepchildren, Susan Connor Ward and her husband Jake Ward of Hampden, Buffy Connor Bullard and her husband Bob Bullard of Alfred, Hugh Connor of Fort Worth, Texas, and Kristan Connor Gould and her husband Greg Gould of Rockland. He is also survived by his brothers, Donald C. Nason Jr. and his wife Connie Nason of Imperial, Mo. and Michael L. Nason and his wife Barbara Nason of East Waterboro; brothers-in-law, Michael Baird of Mechanic Falls and S. James Baird of Los Angeles, Calif., sister-in-law, Judith Roach of Sidney; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and friend, Susan Lumb.
He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Mary Nason; sister Patricia Begley; brother-in-law, Richard Begley; nephew, Eric Begley; in-laws Ralph and Lucile Baird; sister-in-law, Colleen Baird; and brother-in-law, Eric Roach.
A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held on Saturday April 26 at 10 a.m. at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Wayne and Sandra’s interment will be held at a later date at Pine Grove Cemetery, Belgrade.
Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1 Church Street, Augusta, Maine.
