It was Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s drawn face, her saying “I’m afraid,” that hit me most viscerally, more even than the accumulating political shocks and utter disregard for law seen in the last few months.
Does the hollow media creature currently occupying the White House actually have a goon squad he can dispatch to physically harm anyone who disagrees with him? Legislators, poll workers, reporters, lawyers enduring serious threats to their lives and families — this is the stuff of thuggery, not politics! It’s Hitler’s style of governance, or Stalin’s. It doesn’t belong here. How does he dare? How long will we allow it?
Trump forgets that he’s a salaried public servant responsible to us all, not a divinely ordained monarch. It’s time that we impeach (and jail) him, see that those decent people trying to maintain our democratic institutions survive and have a chance to save them.

We believe it’s important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
