The speed with which President Donald Trump and Elon Musk are transforming the USA into a likeness of the former Soviet Union is truly frightening. Our democratic republic is turning into a fascist dictatorship right before our eyes.
Trump sides with Vladimir Putin against our allies in Ukraine. He plots to take over Gaza, Greenland and Panama. Hooded secret police arrest dissidents in the streets and deport immigrants to a gulag in El Salvador. Law firms, universities and museums are shaken down by the Trump administration as it twists the American virtues of diversity, equity and inclusion into crimes against white men, and Congress and the courts just stand by while Trump and Musk and his DOGE gang dismantle the federal government and replace it with an oligarchy that benefits only billionaires.
At some point the American people are going to have had enough. Perhaps when Musk eliminates Social Security and Medicare, Trump tariffs ruin the economy and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. unleashes diseases all over the land there will be a popular uprising against this tyranny. Until then, there is only outrage and disbelief in the land of the formerly free.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
