Janet Dunn Briggs

WESTBROOK – Janet Dunn Briggs, 91, formerly of Augusta and Winthrop, died Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the Avita Stroudwater Assisted Living Facility in Westbrook following a long illness. She was born in Augusta, on Oct. 27, 1933, a daughter of the late Leo F. Dunn Sr. and Margaret Buckley (Cunningham) Dunn.

Mrs. Briggs was a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1951, a graduate of Gates Business School, in Augusta and earned an associate’s degree from UMA.

She was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and had been employed by the State of Maine in several positions from Secretary to Governor Clauson to working as Secretary for the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Ed Pert.

Mrs. Briggs was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, John W. Briggs; her parents; siblings Leo F. Dunn, Jr., Mary Dunn McLaughlin, Margaret Dunn Russell, Edward P. Dunn, David L. Dunn, and Ellen Dunn Guerette; as well as several of “The Outlaws” who had married into the Dunn Clan.

She is survived by her daughter, Ellen Briggs of Westbrook; grandson, Michael Hartmann; former son-in-law, Arvin Hartmann; sister, Katherine D. Perry, brother, William J. Dunn, Sr.; lifelong best friend, Janice Murphy Gray; as well as dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit on Monday, May 5 from 2 to 5 p.m., at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 6, 11 a.m., at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta. Burial and committal prayers will follow in the family lot in Forest Grove Cemetery, Winthrop Street, Augusta.
