John Robert Stewart
WINTHROP – John Robert Stewart, 80, of Winthrop, passed away peacefully at home on April 27, 2025, with his loving wife of 57 years, Enga Stewart, by his side.
Born in Bangor on Oct. 24, 1944, to Elizabeth and Carl Stewart. John was raised in Old Town and graduated from Old Town High School in 1963. He then began his studies at the University of Maine at Orono before proudly serving five years in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Upon returning, he completed his degree in electrical engineering and went on to serve his community through a long and dedicated career with the City of Bangor Engineering Department, Bangor Hydro Electric Company, and Central Maine Power Company in Augusta.
John was a man of many passions and talents. A lifelong learner and avid reader, he loved exploring new ideas and skills. He was a gifted woodworker, painter, carver, blacksmith, and fabricator. He built a family camp by hand and found joy in working the land—digging out rocks, building stone walls, cutting trees, and hosting big bonfires. He was an enthusiastic rockhound and collector who never passed up a good yard sale. Whether with a book or tool in hand, John found purpose in creating, discovering, and sharing what he loved with others.
John’s greatest joy came from his family. He was a proud and supportive father and grandfather, rarely missing a sporting event or performance. He and Enga also opened their hearts and home as foster parents to 25 children over the course of 10 years, a testament to their deep faith and generosity.
John is survived by his wife, Enga; his sister, Margaret “Peggy” Treat and husband Robert; his sons Jonathan and wife Barbara, and Gregory and wife Kristina; and many beloved grandchildren.
He will be remembered for his kindness, craftsmanship, sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6 at the Winthrop United Methodist Church, 58 Main St., Winthrop, followed by a reception. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home where memories, condolences and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of their website at http://www.khrfuneralHomes.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to the
University of Maine College of Engineering, Winthrop United Methodist Church, or your local charity.
