WEST GARDINER — A fire that reportedly started in a pontoon boat spread to an Overlook Drive home and destroyed it Tuesday night, drawing firefighters from several area departments and the Maine Forest Service.
No one was injured in the blaze, the cause of which was under investigation Wednesday.
The fire call came in just after 5 p.m. Tuesday as a report of a boat on a trailer on fire near a home.
By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had spread to the home, which was well involved, West Gardiner fire Chief Mike Gross said Wednesday.
The home and boat were total losses.
An owner of the home had been working on the pontoon boat, which was parked in front of the residence, said Shannon Moss, public information officer of the state Department of Public Safety.
Moss said the homeowners were on the back porch of the home and discovered the fire after seeing smoke. They tried to extinguish the fire but it quickly moved into the eaves of the home.
Overlook Drive is a private camp road off Pond Road, leading to Cobbosseecontee Stream in southeast West Gardiner.
At one point, embers from the structure fire spread into brush behind the adjacent home, which the Maine Forest Service extinguished.
The plume of smoke could be seen for miles Tuesday evening.
Firefighters from Gardiner, Farmingdale, Randolph, Pittston, Hallowell, Augusta, Manchester, Litchfield and Richmond responded to help at the West Gardiner fire.
The American Red Cross responded as well.
Gross said multiple tanker trucks were needed to transport water to the fire scene, as there was no hydrant on the private narrow road, making getting water to the site a challenge. Water was trucked to the site from a hydrant at the intersection of Lewiston Road, which is also Route 126, and Old Lewiston Road.
“We needed to put the word out for tanker trucks to get water to the scene,” Gross said. “It’s a remote area, so all the water had to be tanked in.”
Gross said Cobbosseecontee Stream was not accessible by firefighting apparatuses as a potential water source at the fire site.
Gross declined to identify the home’s residents.
Firefighters used an excavator to remove debris as they worked to extinguish the fire. Firefighters were on the scene until shortly past 10 p.m. Tuesday.
The Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, Gross said.
