FARMINGTON — The unveiling and dedication of a Blue Star Highway Marker in the triangle near Center Bridge will be among three programs to celebrate Memorial Day on Monday in Farmington. Services will also be held in Chesterville and Weld that day.
At noon, the service for the Blue Star marker will feature a welcome, singing of “America the Beautiful” led by local Girl Scouts, an invocation and presentation of the colors by Roderick-Crosby American Legion Post 28, and the pledge of allegiance led by local Boy Scouts, according to Rachel McClellan, president of Mt. Blue Area Garden Club.
Guests and officials will be introduced and the history of the Blue Star Highway Marker memorial program will be shared prior to the marker’s unveiling and dedication, McClellan said May 15. Town Manager Erica LaCroix will accept the marker, after which a wreath will be placed, a prayer given and taps played.
Farmington selectmen approved the marker’s location last October. Blue Star is for veterans who served in the armed forces and Gold Star is for families whose service members were killed in the line of duty, McClellan said.
Farmington will begin its celebrations at 10 a.m. at the Teague World War I Memorial Arch on North Main Street. Last year, there was a rededication of the arch on its 100th anniversary. Presentation of colors, prayers, laying of a wreath, guest speakers and the playing of Taps will be included, Barry “Butch” Tracy, Americanism officer for the legion, said May 15.
Speakers for that service and the one to follow at 11 a.m. at Meeting House Park on Main Street are still being confirmed. Wreaths will be placed at several monuments in the park, he said.
Other services planned
In Chesterville, the American flag at Chesterville Center Union Meeting House at 3 Borough Road will be lowered to half mast at sunrise, then raised to full mast at noon, organizer Rob Rogers said May 15. The bell will be rung, he said.
“Anyone is welcome to come to the bell ringing,” he said. “It will be very informal.”
A brief service with placement of a wreath and Taps is planned in Weld at 1 p.m. at the Weld Public Library on Church Street, organizer Sean Minear said May 15.
“Last year we did the dedication of the new monument,” he said. “This year we are keeping it pretty simple.”
