SOMERSET, N.J. — Blaze Jordan homered and Connelly Early pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings as the Portland Sea Dogs defeated the Somerset Patriots 4-1 in their series finale Sunday.
The Sea Dogs (20-15) are a half-game behind first-place Binghamton in the Eastern League’s Northeast Division standings.
Jordan continued a hot streak with a two-run homer in the eighth inning. In his last five games, he is batting .438 (7-for-16). Early (3-0, 1.88 ERA) allowed two hits and struck out eight batters as he improved to 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA and 16 strikeouts in May.
Max Ferguson had two singles and two steals for the Sea Dogs, who opened the scoring in the third inning when Mikey Romero’s sacrifice fly scored Ferguson. Portland made it 2-0 in the fifth, when Juan Chacon’s RBI double — his first hit in a Portland uniform — drove home Ferguson.
Rafael Flores homered for Somerset in the ninth. Bailey Dees (1-3, 4.50) allowed two runs on six hits in six innings, striking out four.
