Noah Stern-Rich’s May 11 op-ed (“Maine needs to get its act together on gun laws“) seems to imply that the more anti-gun laws, the better. We already have a federal background check that works. It would work even better if all local criminal records were tied into the federal system.
As to red flag laws, our enhanced yellow flag law seems to work here in Maine. As for waiting periods, only law-abiding citizens are affected by them. The criminal already has a weapon and does not care what the law is.
Many of our legislators are hung up on “feel-good” laws, which do nothing but hamper law-abiding citizens.
Lastly, don’t forget the reason for the Second Amendment. It has nothing to do with hunting or sport shooting, etc. The Second Amendment is our most important amendment. Without it, the people would have no means to defend against a tyrannical government.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
