HIRAM — Braiden Croteau pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts Thursday as the Sacopee Valley baseball team edged Monmouth Academy 4-3 in a meeting of Class C South contenders.
Croteau, Bryce Stacey and Silas Nielsen each drove in a run for reigning state champion Sacopee Valley (7-4), which snapped the Mustangs’ six-game winning streak.
Rory Foyt hit a double for Class C South No. 1 Monmouth (8-3).
MT. ABRAM 14, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 12: Three big offensive innings were enough for the Roadrunners (9-2) to overcome the Seagulls’ 12-run, 14-hit performance in Salem Township.
Mt. Abram scored five runs in the bottom of the first, five in the third and four in the fourth.
The Roadrunners tallied eight hits and drew 11 walks. Bryce Wilcox drove in three runs and had one hit, while Ash Rollins doubled and singled, Brennan Mitchell singled twice and scored three runs, and Eben Laliberte had two RBI.
Old Orchard Beach’s (6-5) Trot Moody finished with three hits, scored four runs and drove in two runs. Wesley Gallant, Aiden Hodgkins and Caleb Aube had two hits apiece, and Kooper Gervais doubled for the Seagulls’ lone extra-base hit.
SOFTBALL
MONMOUTH ACADEMY 15, WINTHROP/MARANACOOK 1: Shannah Parsons hit two home runs and earned the win in the circle as the Mustangs (11-0) beat the Winthrop/Maranacook co-op (2-8) in a five-inning game at Kents Hill School in Readfield.
Parsons allowed one hit and struck out nine. Riley Smith had three hits and drove in five runs for Monmouth.
Ella Rice hit a home run for Winthrop/Maranacook.
