BOSTON — Red Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks took to social media Thursday to express his displeasure about death threats he says he received following Boston’s most recent loss to the New York Mets.
In a post on Instagram, Hendriks said comments were directed at both him and his family.
“Just as an FYI: Threats against me and my wife’s life are horrible and cruel. You need help,” Hendriks wrote in the post. “Leaving comments and telling me to commit suicide and how you wish I died from cancer is disgusting and vile.”
Hendriks, a 36-year-old reliever who previously battled non-Hodgkin lymphoma, has appeared in 11 games this season. He’s 0-1 with a 5.56 ERA.
Hendriks relieved starter Garrett Crochet with one out in the sixth inning of Boston’s 5-1 loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday. He finished the inning but gave up three straight singles to start the seventh, including an infield single by Luisangel Acuña that was initially ruled an out before replays showed he beat the throw to first.
“Maybe you should step back and reevaluate your life’s purpose before hiding behind a screen and attacking players and their families,” Hendriks added in his post. “Whether you do it from your fake accounts or are dumb enough to do it from your real account.
“I think I speak for all players who have had to deal with this in their career when I say enough is enough.”
The incident comes less than a month after Red Sox All-Star left fielder Jarren Duran said a fan near the dugout in Cleveland said “something inappropriate” to him after he flied out during a 13-3 victory over the Guardians.
That came days after a Netflix documentary aired that included Duran opening up about his mental health and discussing an attempted suicide three years ago.
BOSTON ACQUIRED first baseman Ryan Noda from the Los Angeles Angels in a deal for cash.
Noda had been designated for assignment by the Angels before the trade that gives the Red Sox another possible option at first base.
Noda was immediately optioned by Boston to Triple-A Worcester, with outfielder Masataka Yoshida getting transferred to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster.
The Red Sox have been looking for help at first base after losing Triston Casas to a season-ending knee injury earlier this month.
The 29-year-old Noda played 164 games for the Oakland Athletics in 2023-24, batting .212 with 17 homers, 58 RBI and a .713 OPS. He had played 38 games this season at Triple-A Salt Lake this season, batting .148 with four homers, eight RBI and a .633 OPS.
THE OPENER OF a four-game series between the AL East rival Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox was postponed because of steady rainfall expected to continue throughout Thursday evening.
It will be made up as the first half of a split doubleheader on Friday. The first game is set for 1:35 p.m., with Friday’s regularly scheduled game remaining at 7:10 p.m. Tickets for Thursday’s game will still be valid for Friday’s first game.
The Orioles snapped an eight-game losing streak with an 8-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. The Red Sox are coming off a 5-1 loss on Wednesday to the New York Mets, which was the final game of a three-game series in which Boston won the first two games.
It’s unclear whether the teams will stick with their planned starters. Orioles left-hander Cade Povich (1-3, 5.23 ERA) was set to be on the mound for Baltimore. Boston right-hander Lucas Giolito (1-1, 7.08) was scheduled to start for the Red Sox.
