BOSTON — Rafael Devers had a career-high eight RBI, hitting a three-run homer in the sixth inning and a grand slam in a 13-run eighth to lead the Boston Red Sox over the Baltimore Orioles 19-5 Friday in what was supposed to be the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Instead, the second game was rained out, so the teams will again try to play a doubleheader on Saturday.

Boston trailed 2-1 entering the sixth, when Ceddanne Rafaela hit an RBI single off Seranthony Domínguez (2-1), Jarren Duran had an RBI single against Gregory Soto, and Devers followed with his fifth homer in 10 career at-bats against Soto.

Devers had four hits and leads the major leagues with 47 RBI. He hit his seventh career slam and his second in a six-day span, and now has 12 home runs this season. The grand slam came off rookie infielder Emmanuel Rivera, who gave up eight runs and got three outs, leaving him with a 72.00 ERA. Devers hit an RBI single earlier in the inning against Cionel Pérez.

Boston scored its most runs since a 20-8 win over Toronto on Aug. 11, 2021, and finished with 20 hits.

Baltimore has lost nine of 10 and 15 of 18, dropping to 16-33. The Orioles are 1-5 since manager Brandon Hyde was fired and replaced on an interim basis by third-base coach Tony Mansolino.

Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman left because of right quadriceps tightness after singling in the fifth inning. The two-time All-Star motioned to the Red Sox dugout, with manager Alex Cora sprinting to check on Bregman’s status. Bregman didn’t bother checking the severity of the injury before heading down the stairs to the clubhouse.

“I felt my quad grab, so I didn’t continue running to second base,” Bregman said. “I stopped and came back to the bag so I wouldn’t make it any worse.”

A two-time World Series winner who spent the first nine seasons of his big-league career with the Houston Astros, Bregman signed with Boston in February. He entered Friday with a .297 batting average, 11 home runs and 35 RBI.

“I knew I needed to come out and see the trainer,” Bregman said. “We’ll know a lot more tomorrow after sleeping and seeing how it presents in the morning. All of my strength is still there, which is good.”

Rob Refsnyder had four RBI, including a three-run homer in the eighth off Pérez. Duran drove in three runs.

Garrett Whitlock (3-0) was credited with the victory, allowing one hit in two scoreless innings of relief. Starting pitcher Brayan Bello labored through four innings, allowing six hits and two runs. He struck out seven and walked one.

Key moment

After Ramón Urías’ one-out RBI single off Justin Slaton cut Baltimore’s gap to 6-3 in the eighth, Slaton struck out Cedric Mullins and retired Heston Kjerstad on a groundout.

Key stat

Devers’ RBI total was the most for a Boston player since Mookie Betts had eight against Toronto on July 2, 2015.
