Marcelo Mayer, ranked by Baseball America as the No. 9 prospect in baseball, was called up Saturday by the Boston Red Sox, according to media reports.

Mayer spent parts of the 2023 and 2024 seasons with the Portland Sea Dogs. The season, he was batting .271 with a .347 on-base percentage and a .471 slugging percentage in 43 games for Triple-A Worcester. He has seen time at shortstop, second base, third base and DH.

The Boston Globe reported that Worcester manager Chad Tracy informed Mayer of his promotion.

Boston needs infield depth after a injuries to first baseman Triston Casas and third baseman Alex Bregman. Casas had season-ending surgery after rupturing the patellar tendon in his left knee. Bregman left Friday’s game against the Orioles with a right quadriceps soreness and is scheduled to have an MRI.

Boston drafted Mayer with the fourth overall pick in the 2021 draft out of Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, California. He was promoted to Double-A Portland in his second full season in the Red Sox organization, playing 43 games with the Sea Dogs. His season ended in early August because of inflammation in his left shoulder.

Mayer started the 2024 season with Portland, playing 77 games before being promoted to Triple-A Worcester in August. He went on the injured list immediately afrter his promotion because of a back injury and didn’t play for the WooSox.
