Frank E. Southard III
AUGUSTA – Frank E. Southard III, 78, died peacefully on May 21, 2025, at his home with his loving family by his side.
Frank was born in Augusta, on July 17, 1946, the son of the late Frank E. Jr. and Charlotte (Fuller) Southard.
Frank attended Cony High School and graduate from Kents Hill in 1964. He received a B.A. degree in English from Ricker College in 1970 and a B.A. Degree in Anthropology form the University of Maine in 1977. He went on to earn an M.A. in Anthropology from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1982. Frank did anthropological fieldwork in Port Hope Simpson Labrador from 1979 to 1982. From this experience he wrote “Salt Cod and God: An Ethnography of Socio-Economic Conditions Affecting Status in a Southern Labrador Community”
Frank taught English at Cony High School from 1970 to 19756 and was employed by the Maine Department of Human Services and later by the Department of Labor until 2006. Frank was a member of several Lions Clubs and held positions of Club President and Sone Chair. After retirement, he concentrated on cabinet making and built many pieces of finely crafted furniture which were on display at various galleries around the state. Frank might be fondly remembered for his dry humor and wit.
Franck is survived by his wife, Ethel M. (Cunningham) Southard of Augusta; his first wife, Loretta B. (Brotherton) Southard; a son, Benjamin Southard; a daughter, Betsy Southard; granddaughter Izabella Bickford.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
