PARIS — Oxford Hills girls lacrosse coach Jenna Durgin called a timeout with to calm her players and remind them to slow down instead of forcing offensive opportunities.
Two minutes remained in the fourth quarter, and the Vikings were leading Mt. Blue by three goals.
“I said to them, it doesn’t matter how many goals you win by, right,” Durgin said. “You don’t get extra points for winning by more goals, you just need one goal to win. Apparently they took that literally.”
Mt. Blue’s Grace Allen scored twice after that timeout to pull the Cougars within a goal, but Oxford Hills stalled in the last minute and held on for a 16-15 win.
The Vikings didn’t score in the fourth quarter, but produced plenty of offense in the first three, tallying eight goals in the first, three in second and five in the third.
Senior Gracie Hart led the Oxford Hills attack with six goals and one assist, and Abby Marcotte added four goals.
“I think that a lot of the help for our goals today was (from) our teammates finding the open space,” Hart said. “When Abby Marcotte would drive to the net and see the wide open cut, when she took that, it worked beautifully.”
Sophomore Lydia Goyette, who chipped in three goals and one assist, said more opportunities were generated off Mt. Blue’s double teams, which allowed her to find the open player to drive to the net.

They said it
• “Lydia (Goyette), we were saying on the sideline, she could run a clinic on a draw-and-dump where she brings her defender in and it pops out, and she’s open. I mean, she had three goals because of it.” — Jenna Durgin
• “Our two captains, (Maya Kellett and Bree Griffin) are just really great athletes, really dynamic. The type of player that you want on every inch of the field. … Their energy is what drives our team, and they are really selfless players, and I think that is what is so special about them. They’re not looking to get the goals themselves, they’re looking to set their teammates up.” — Mt. Blue coach Liz LeClair
• “I love that (Twizzler) shot. Personally, it’s my favorite shot on Earth. I love it, it’s amazing, it works every single time. Having the confidence to take that on this field is amazing, and the feeling after it is so good, celebrating with my teammates.” — Gracie Hart
