Thank you for the the June 1 Maine Sunday Telegram article about Margaret Chase Smith’s legacy: her “Declaration of Conscience.”
I’ve read that Sen. Susan Collins looked up to Smith. I’m asking Collins to look into her heart and find her own “Declaration of Conscience.” Smith took a risk and stuck to her principles. I don’t see Collins doing that. I see her repeatedly backing down to President Trump and doing nothing while our rights are stripped away.
Will Collins favor a budget that gives Trump further immunity? (Yes, hidden in the bill: “No court of the United States may use appropriated funds to enforce a contempt citation for failure to comply with an injunction or temporary restraining order if no security was given when the injunction or order was issued …”). Not only does it give nearly unlimited power, the bill creates the biggest redistribution of wealth ever seen in the U.S.: from the poor and working class to the rich.
I hope Sen. Collins will take a stand and declare her conscience.
