BAR HARBOR — Shealyn Brochu and Rowan Berry often stood side-by-side on the podium Tuesday at the Class B track and field championships.

The Morse and Greely runners were just as close on the track at the finish of the distance events.

A mere 0.28 seconds separated Brochu (4:51.00) from Barry (4:51.28) in the battle for first in the 1,600 meters at Mount Desert Island High School. In the 800, Barry (2:13.60) prevailed (2:13.73) in an even tighter battle.

Their times in each event were faster than the Class B meet records. They also went head-to-head in the 3,200, which Brochu won in 11:04.11.

“We’ve been running pretty similar times all season long, but haven’t gotten to race each other, so it’s been really fun today,” Barry said. “Our PRs were within a second in both events, so I knew it was going to be pretty close and that it could go any way.”

The Greely girls scored 86 points to beat out Yarmouth (74.5) and Freeport (65) for the team championship. The Rangers also took the boys title, racking up 96 points to runner-up Lincoln Academy’s 70. Greely earned its second consecutive sweep of the team crowns.

“It feels great; all the hard work’s paid off,” said Greely senior Owen Partridge. “Our coaches and athletes have put in a lot of hard work over the years, and it’s really nice. We have such a community behind us, too.”

The title for the Greely girls came without sophomore Katie Spencer, a transgender student who was the top seed in the girls pole vault but did not compete. Greely coach David Dowling did not elaborate on Spencer’s absence, other than to say she “was not injured.” Freeport’s Kessa Benner cleared 9 feet, 6 inches to win the event.

Brochu and Barry were inseparable throughout the 1,600, with Brochu maintaining a lead of no more than four-tenths of a second on Barry at all four splits. Barry then led Brochu by 0.56 seconds at the halfway mark of the 800 before holding off the Morse senior.

Barry set a Class B record in the 800, which MDI’s Tia Tardy set in 2017 with a time of 2:14.76. Brochu’s meet record in the 1,600 supplanted Waterville’s Bethanie Brown’s mark of 4:55.23, set in 2012. Brochu did it with Brown, now an assistant coach for the Purple Panthers, present at Tuesday’s meet.

“It’s pretty cool, especially since she was here today,” Brochu said. “She came up to me today, as well, and I was glad I got a chance to talk to her.”

Victoria Zandan won three events (100 hurdles, 15.90; 300 hurdles, 48.19; long jump, 16-9 1/4), helping Greely claim its 18th state title, the most of any program in Maine girls outdoor track and field history.

Lake Region senior Sam Laverdiere successfully defended his titles in the 800 (1:55.11), 1,600 (4:16.61) and 3,200 (9:37.63). The closest of those three was the 800, where Morse’s Eli Riggs finished 0.56 seconds behind.

“My big motivation for winning the triple in back-to-back years is to give myself a shot at Gatorade (Athlete) of the Year,” Laverdiere said. “I have to give compliments to Eli for holding off on the back stretch. He ran a great race, and after he held me off, I waited until 100 to go and just had a little bit more strength than him.”

Leavitt’s Stephen Pierre successfully defended his state titles in the 110 hurdles (15.45 seconds) and long jump (19-11 1/2). He also placed second in the 300 hurdles (41.24) and third in the high jump (5-10), racking up 34 points by himself.

“I think the key to (success in the numerous events) is just a balanced schedule at practice,” said Pierre. “I like to balance it out — not focus too much on any one thing — and do the best I can. It paid off today.”

The Greely boys got individual victories from Partridge (400, 50.69), Samuel Anania (pole vault, 13-0) and Alexander Mendoza (high jump, 6-2).

Other girls winners included Fryeburg Academy’s Avery Bariteau (100 dash, 12.69; 200, 26.14) and Gardiner’s Natalie Grant (race walk, 8:09.93). On the boys side, Yarmouth’s Ethan Hoffman won the shot put with a heave of 56-2 1/2.
