A Garland woman has been arrested in connection with the April shooting death of Velma Withee, 78, of Hartland.
Bonnie Coombs, 69, was arrested at about 8 p.m. Wednesday and taken to the Somerset County jail, where she is being held without bail.
In a news release issued Thursday, Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Coombs is Withee’s sister and the cause of Withee’s death was gunshot wounds.
On April 12, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office requested help from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit Central following the discovery of a dead woman at a home on Canaan Road in Hartland.
Just about two weeks later, Withee’s death was ruled a homicide following an April autopsy at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, but the cause of death was not released at that time.
The initial call to the home on Canaan Road, which is also Route 23, was classified as a medical emergency on the Somerset County dispatch log. Two sheriff’s deputies responded and were at the home for several hours. The Hartland Fire Department was there briefly, also.
Moss said the investigation into Withee’s death remains active and ongoing.
