READFIELD — It was the matchup the Maranacook/Winthrop boys lacrosse team wanted from the start of the season.
And on Friday afternoon, the Hawks got their revenge.
Sophomore Jacob Lyons scored six goals to lift the top-seeded Hawks past No. 8 Wells, 12-10, in a Class C quarterfinal at Ricky Gibson Field of Dreams. The matchup was the first between these teams since last year’s Class C final, when Wells beat Maranacook/Winthrop, 14-9.
“It feels good to move on to the next round. We won this one for the seniors,” Lyons said.
Added Maranacook/Winthrop coach Dan Brannigan: “Our biggest (goal) was to not give (Wells) fast breaks. I told the boys to dig deep.”
The Hawks (12-3) move on to the divisional final on Tuesday against No. 4 Oak Hill (9-6), which knocked out fifth-seeded Morse 12-8 on Friday.
Wells, the defending Class C champion, finishes 6-9. Junior Kevin Bolduc led the Warriors with four goals and notched his 100th career point.
“I’m extremely sad for my seniors, we suited three all season long,” Wells coach Matt Petrie said. “When you have a bunch of 14-year-olds, it’s tough to run with 18-year-olds, and we rotate about seven freshmen. The future looks good. Skill-wise, we just weren’t as fast or as strong.”
How did they get there?
The Hawks, down 7-5 at halftime, got through on grit and an improved defense throughout the second half. They got a lift offensively from Lyons, who did most of his damage in the second half, including two consecutive efforts where he split two defenders on his way to a goal.
“There was motivation from everyone, a team effort to get ourselves back up,” Lyons said. “I had to trust my team to set picks (offensively). I just really wanted (to score) for the seniors, really.”
“For a No. 1 seed, we definitely got one of the hardest (quarterfinal) matchups (we could get),” Brannigan said. “We knew it. I’ve known Coach Petrie for a long time. … There’s a couple different teams I would have rather seen without my top faceoff guy. But the kids were fired up this morning. It’s a huge win.”
Man down
Maranacook/Winthrop managed to pull off the win despite the absence of one of its top players, senior Cobey Dunn, who broke the orbital bone in his eye during practice on Thursday.
Brannigan said Dunn has a follow-up appointment on Tuesday, and could be available for the Hawks, if given the go-ahead by doctors.
“There’s a wild chance that Cobey comes back next week,” Brannigan said. “We’ve already got the (protective) shields (for his helmet) and he has an appointment Tuesday morning. If he’s cleared and good to go — he still comes to every practice — we’re hoping we get him back and take a run at a state title as a senior captain.”
Statistical leaders
• Maranacook/Winthrop: Jacob Lyons (6 goals), Lucas Woodruff (15 saves).
