FARMINGDALE — The Hall-Dale softball team is back in the Class C South final.
The latest trip certainly didn’t come easy.
Freshman third baseman Genevieve Ciccarelli scored from second base on an error in the sixth inning, giving the second-seeded Bulldogs a 3-2 win over No. 3 Lisbon in a Class C South semifinal Saturday afternoon.
“I’m so happy,” Ciccarelli said. “We worked so hard to get here, and I’m so proud of everyone. I did not expect (to score the go-ahead run).”
Senior shortstop Torie Tibbetts was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple for Hall-Dale (16-2). Senior catcher Jade Graham was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Senior pitcher Lucy Gray allowed five hits, struck out six and walked two. At the plate, she was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
The Bulldogs will play fourth-seeded Dirigo at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s College in Standish. Hall-Dale is trying to become the first team since Madison in 1998 to win five straight Class C regional titles. The Bulldogs are hoping to become the first softball team in state history to win five consecutive state titles. The last team to attempt the feat was Richmond in 2017 in Class D.
Lisbon finished 13-5. Outfielder Brynn Chase was 2 for 2 with an RBI, while pitcher Mackenzie Eaton allowed six hits and struck out six.
Ciccarelli led off the sixth inning with a base hit to right field, then reached second on a wild pitch. With one out, Mira Skehan popped out to Lisbon third baseman Molly Austin, who tried to double-up Ciccarelli at second. The ball got away to the outfield, and Ciccarelli easily reached third. She immediately rounded the bag and headed for home, sliding across the plate before the throw reached Greyhounds catcher Sophia Bowie.
“When I got to third, I wasn’t expecting to (go home),” Ciccarelli said. “I just booked it. We needed that (run).”
“(Ciccarelli) has worked her butt off,” Hall-Dale coach Steve Acedo said. “She’s just made big strides during the season. She was heads up (on the play). I don’t think most people would have sent her, but I felt we needed to take a chance.”
How did they get there?
• Level-headedness. Hall-Dale led 2-0 after the first inning, but Lisbon tied it in the third. Mackenzie Theriault scored on an RBI single by Chase, who scored on a bloop single to right by Aubriana Bright.
Hall-Dale didn’t panic, however, particularly Gray, who allowed one hit over the final four innings.
• Torie Tibbetts. The shortstop didn’t win the Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year — that was bestowed to Monmouth Academy’s Shannah Parsons — but she showed that she’s the most complete player in the conference, going 2 for 3 with two extra base hits and making a leaping catch in the seventh inning to help secure the win.
“We knew we’d be back (in the regional final); I always had faith in my girls,” Tibbetts said. “It was light in the dugout and light on the field. We knew what we had to do and got it done.”
Acedo added: “As far as a complete package, I think Torie is the best player in our conference and may be the best player in somebody else’s conference, too.”
Tough call
• Lisbon was close to taking a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning, when Brooke Norman raced home from third base after Bright hit what appeared to be a sacrifice fly to center field. After the ball was caught, Hall-Dale threw it to third, and the umpire called Norman out for leaving the base too early.
“I’m super proud (of the team),” Lisbon coach Chris Bickford said. “(Eaton) pitched awesome, the defense played awesome. It came down to one play at the end that threw it away for us, but all in all, it was a great game. It was a great game. I don’t know what else you can ask for.”
Series wrap-up
• Hall-Dale swept three games against Lisbon this season. Hall-Dale beat Lisbon 8-2 on May 16 and 5-2 on May 30.
