In a recent article (“Despite fears, most Maine districts OK school budgets,” June 12), a voter asked, “Why in hell should I be paying school tax when I don’t have students in school?”
We don’t pay taxes to have our own children go to school. We pay taxes so we can have an educated society. A well-educated society is essential to democracy.
Elsewhere in the paper, in an Associated Press story on the national budget, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene conflated criticism with hatred in her critique of further funding of PBS and NPR. Taylor Greene should know better. Being critical is not the same as being hateful; bad news is not the same as fake news.
