AUGUSTA — “Playoff Jacob” came through in the clutch to help Maranacook/Winthrop advance to a second straight Class C boys lacrosse state championship game.

Sophomore Jacob Lyons scored two of his five goals in the fourth quarter, including the tying goal, and Caleb Morgan netted the winner to lift the Hawks to a 14-13 victory over Oak Hill/Monmouth/Lisbon/St. Dom’s in a physical state semifinal Wednesday at Cony High School.

“We joke that there’s regular season Jacob (Lyons), who’s pretty damn good, and then there’s playoff Jacob, who’s just unreal, very, very little rattles and very little shakes (him),” Hawks coach Daniel Brannigan said.

Maranacook/Winthrop (13-3), the top seed in Class C, will face No. 2 North Yarmouth Academy (11-5) in the state title game Friday at Memorial Field in Portland.

The Hawks and the fourth-seeded Raiders (9-7) entered the fourth quarter tied 10-10. Lyons scored the first goal of the fourth quarter, but Oak Hill responded with two goals, by Gage Spier and Kaiden Delano, in a 26-second span to lead 12-11 with 7:05 left.

Lyons set up Ethan Chilton to tie the game, but Matt Fecteau quickly answered to put the Raiders back on top with 4:13 remaining. Lyons’ fifth goal evened the score with 2:36 left, then Mitchell Maceda set up Morgan 32 seconds later.

“Coaches were telling me it’s a big game,” Lyons said. “They (said) we’ve got to really try to step up today. The team helped out; if it wasn’t for them — they’ve always got my back.”

Morgan and Chilton finished with three goals apiece for the Hawks.

Oak Hill started slow, scoring one goal in the first quarter and three in the second, before finding its offensive footing in a six-goal third quarter.

“We never gave up … . I thought when we took a lead, we thought we’re going to maybe able to add to it a little bit,” Raiders coach David Snyder said. “We made a couple mistakes, turned the ball over, didn’t get back, gave them a couple breaks, and then that was enough for them to win it.

“They played hard, they pressured us early, took us off our game a little bit. A lot of the fundamental mistakes we made (were) because of the pressure that they put up.”

Delano led Oak Hill with five goals. Fecteau, one of a handful of St. Dominic Academy players on the team, added three.

Raiders goalie Carter Austin finished with 12 saves, while Hawks goalie Lucas Woodruff stopped 10 shots.

Maranacook/Winthrop will be playing in its third state title game Saturday. The Hawks lost in last year’s final, 14-9 to Wells, and fell to NYA 17-5 in the 2019 final.
