Maine State Police continue to look for the killer of a Tenants Harbor woman who went missing while paddleboarding on Crawford Pond in Union last week.
In a statement on Wednesday, they recognized “the fear and discomfort that this incident has brought to the town of Union and the Crawford Pond community.”
“We remain steadfast in our efforts to investigate the death of 48-year-old Sunshine Stewart,” the statement on Facebook reads. “Detectives from Major Crimes Unit Central have been reviewing all of the leads pushed through our tip line and continue to follow every investigative and forensic avenue. We have also been working with the owners of the nearby campground, who have been cooperative and willing to assist and help with the ongoing investigation.”
Stewart was reported missing last Wednesday and her body was found early last Thursday. An autopsy was performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, and her manner of death was determined to be a homicide.
“We understand the community’s concerns and ask that residents continue to remain vigilant, be aware of their surroundings, and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement,” the statement reads.
On Monday, state police established a tip line to aid in their investigation. According to the state police statement, it’s already getting used.
“We appreciate the tips that have already come in and ask that anyone with information continue to reach out,” the statement says.
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss declined in an email to disclose the number of tips the department has received and whether there were any witnesses or suspects in the case.
Anyone with information related to the case is requested to call Maine State Police at 207-624-7076 or submit a tip to the tip line by texting MESPTIP to 847411.
