Arya Bhatia, Cheverus freshman: Bhatia had an outstanding first season, going 12-5 and reaching the quarterfinals of the state singles tournament. He also helped Cheverus advance to the Class A semifinals.
Alberto Cutone, Kennebunk junior: Cutone reached the semifinals of the singles tournament, where he lost to Matt Morneault for the second straight season. He defeated Tianyi Ma in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-0. Cutone finished the season with a 12-2 record.
Tianyi Ma, Thornton Academy senior: Ma finished his final high school season with a 14-4 record, leading the Golden Trojans to the Class A South final. Ma reached the quarterfinals of the state singles tournament.
Will Meyer, Camden Hills sophomore: The second seed in the state singles tournament went 17-2 and helped the Windjammers to the Class A final. Both of his losses were to Matt Morneault — in the singles and team state championship matches.
Matt Morneault, Falmouth sophomore: After losing in the state singles final as a freshman, Morneault took the title this season as the top seed by defeating Will Meyer, 6-3, 6-4. The Varsity Maine Player of the Year ended the season 13-0 and helped the Navigators win the Class A championship for the third straight season.
Drake Turcotte, Skowhegan senior: Turcotte, who coach Dan Riley said is the best player to come out of Skowhegan, was 12-3 this year, with two losses to Will Meyer. He entered the state singles tournament as the ninth seed and defeated Jerry Nguyen of Foxcroft Academy, the eighth seed, in the Round of 16 before falling to eventual state champion Matt Morneault in the quarterfinals.
Andre Violette, Yarmouth senior: Violette helped the Clippers to the Class B state championship for the sixth straight year. He went 15-1 this season after spending his junior year developing his tennis skills in Spain. His only loss was to Will Meyer in the semifinals of the state singles tournament.
Sam Yoon, Falmouth senior: Yoon went 10-1 this season as the state champion Navigators’ No. 2 player behind Matt Morneault. Yoon won every regular-season and postseason match except his state singles quarterfinal match against Andre Violette.
Coaches of the Year
Zach Arnold and Siera Tibbetts, Orono: Arnold and Tibbetts led the Red Riots to a 16-0 record and the Class C title, which they won by knocking off Waynflete and ending the Flyers’ streak of 16 consecutive state championships. The Red Riots won 11 of their 16 matches by a score of 5-0, including three times in the postseason.
