Through it all, despite the massive pressure he faced representing a district carried by President Trump, my representative, Congressman Jared Golden, stood strong against the “big, beautiful bill” because it contained so much that would hurt Mainers.
This isn’t Congressman Golden playing politics or vying for votes. It would have been easy for him to see that he represents more Trump voters than Harris voters and support the bill. Instead, Congressman Golden is doing what we sent him to do.
He knows that many of his constituents will be set back: working people who rely on MaineCare to get the medications they need and may lose their coverage; single moms working hard to provide a decent life for their children who will lose the small amount of help they get through food assistance programs; the future generation who will be saddled with such massive debt that the promise of Social Security looks a less certain today.
He is protecting people like me, a union member working to build a bright future for myself and my community.
This bill passed the House by four votes. Four votes. Tight margins like that show that every seat matters.
Sens. King and Collins and Congresswoman Pingree all opposed this bill alongside Rep. Golden. I thank Maine’s entire delegation for being unified in voting against these damaging cuts to SNAP and Medicaid. That’s the Maine spirit that I grew up hearing about and am proud to see represented in Congress through this vote.
